Pilates, named for its creator Joseph Pilates, is a full body strengthening method, consisting of low-impact muscular strength, flexibility and endurance-focussed movements. Pilates emphasizes proper postural alignment, core strength, stability and muscle control. A regular pilates practise promotes: improved posture and balance; a strengthened core; improved flexibility; prevention and treatment of back pain and other common injuries. It is frequently practised by dancers and athletes in cross training methods, and can also be extremely effective in physical rehabilitation.
